September 2026 Social Security payments arrive on four dates: Tuesday, September 1 (SSI), Thursday, September 3 (long-time beneficiaries and those who also get SSI), and then Wednesday September 9, September 16, or September 23 for everyone else, depending on your birthday.
Unlike some months this year, September 2026 has no calendar quirks — September 1 falls on a regular Tuesday, so SSI is paid on the 1st as normal, and there is no doubled or shifted payment. Labor Day (September 7) does not touch any payment date.

Why do SSI and Social Security pay on different days?
They are different programs on different calendars. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) always pays on the 1st of the month — moved earlier only when the 1st hits a weekend or federal holiday. Social Security (retirement, SSDI, survivors) pays on Wednesdays staggered by birthday, a system SSA adopted in 1997 to spread the processing load.

How much are payments in September 2026?
Amounts are unchanged from earlier in the year — the 2.8% COLA for 2026 has been in checks since January, and the next adjustment will not appear until January 2027. Your individual amount only changes mid-year if something about your situation changes: Medicare premium deductions, an earnings-test adjustment, or an offset.
What should you do if your payment doesn’t arrive?
SSA asks you to wait three business days before calling, because most "missing" payments are bank processing delays. The order of operations:
- Check your bank account’s pending transactions — deposits often post late in the day.
- Confirm your payment date against the birthday table above; many worried calls are simply schedule confusion.
- Check your my Social Security account at ssa.gov for the payment record.
- After three business days, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or visit a field office.
When are the October 2026 payments?
October follows the same pattern with one wrinkle: October’s SSI pays on Thursday, October 1, and the Social Security Wednesdays fall on October 14, 21, and 28, with the before-May-1997 group paid Friday, October 2 (the 3rd falls on a Saturday). If you rely on the SSI date, note that November’s SSI payment will also shift because November 1 falls on a Sunday — it arrives Friday, October 30, so late October shows two SSI deposits.

A. No. Labor Day is Monday, September 7 — no payment date lands on it, so nothing moves.
