Medicare Open Enrollment 2027: What Beneficiaries Need to Know
The annual Medicare open enrollment period is underway, giving 69 million beneficiaries until December 7 to review and adjust their healthcare and prescription drug coverage for 2027. Making changes during this window allows beneficiaries to align their health coverage with current medical and financial needs, with most updates taking effect on January 1, 2027.
Navigating plan options can feel overwhelming, but local resources like Cherry Health are offering free, personalized health insurance assistance to help members find and enroll in the right plan before the deadline.
What Changes Can You Make During Open Enrollment?
During the open enrollment period, Medicare beneficiaries have several options to modify their coverage:
- Switch plans: Move from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or vice versa.
- Change Advantage plans: Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
- Manage Part D coverage: Join, switch, or drop a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan if you have Original Medicare.
- Keep current coverage: Retain your existing plan if it continues to meet your healthcare needs.
Additional Enrollment and Support Services
Beyond Medicare, healthcare specialists are available to assist with upcoming enrollment timelines and eligibility requirements:
- Marketplace Open Enrollment: Begins on November 1.
- Medicaid: Specialists are answering questions about eligibility and guiding patients through renewal processes.
What Happens After December 7?
According to AARP, individuals already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan have another chance to make adjustments during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 through March 31. During this timeframe, enrollees can switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare and join a separate Medicare drug plan. Note that this period is restricted to those already enrolled in Medicare Advantage and is not a general open enrollment period for Original Medicare.
Turning 65? Your Initial Enrollment Period
For individuals approaching Medicare eligibility, the Initial Enrollment Period typically begins three months before the month they turn 65 and ends three months after their 65th birthday month. Timing may vary for individuals already receiving certain Social Security benefits or with other qualifying circumstances.
