Baystate Health Protests Call for Medicare for All

A Holyoke family, alongside congressional candidate Nadia Milleron and her supporters, demonstrated outside Baystate Health’s corporate headquarters in Springfield to advocate for single-payer health care and Medicare for All. Organizers aimed to remove insurance companies, including Baystate-owned Health New England, from their role as healthcare gatekeepers.

Organizer and advocate Gloria Caballero stated that insurance companies act as profit-driven middlemen who deny individuals their fundamental right to healthcare while consumers are already taxed by these insurers. Caballero supports a state Health Care Trust proposal designed to cover anyone working 20 hours or more a week in Massachusetts.

Concerns Over Administrative Waste and Denials

During the demonstration outside the office building at 280 Chestnut St., Caballero highlighted the systemic issues of waste, coverage denials, and administrative overhead. She specifically pointed to the extensive time physicians must spend trying to obtain insurance authorization for patient care.

Caballero has organized these protests for three months to coincide with the monthly second Tuesday meetings of Baystate Health’s board. While Baystate Health declined to comment through a spokeswoman, Caballero noted that the provider lobbies for its own interests rather than advocating for a single-payer model.

Congressional Campaign Focuses on Healthcare Reform

Nadia Milleron joined the approximately 30 protesters, holding signs displaying the numbers of federal healthcare bills currently stalled in Congress. As a Berkshire County resident running in the general election for the First District seat against U.S.

Rep. Richard E.

Neal, Milleron has made healthcare a central theme of her campaign, emphasizing a straightforward approach to paying for healthcare.
