Understanding the 2027 Social Security COLA Announcement
For millions of Americans receiving Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) is a crucial update designed to help monthly benefits keep pace with inflation. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is scheduled to officially announce the 2027 COLA this week, ahead of the changes taking effect in January.
When Will the Official 2027 COLA Be Announced?
The official COLA increase for 2027 Social Security payments will be announced on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. This announcement follows the final inflation data release required to complete the calculation.
How Is the Social Security COLA Calculated?
The Social Security Administration determines its yearly COLA based on the average increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) during July, August, and September. The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases these inflation figures, with the September data finalizing the metric needed for the adjustment. Predictions are also informed by the consumer price index, the Federal Reserve interest rate, and the national unemployment rate.
Latest Projections and Estimates for 2027
Recent forecasts from organizations like The Senior Citizens League and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) have placed the anticipated 2027 COLA in the mid-3% range:
- The Senior Citizens League: Projected a 3.5% increase, which would raise the average retired worker’s Social Security check by $67.90. This reflects a slight adjustment from their August prediction of 3.6%.
- AARP: Projected a 3.6% increase, which would boost checks by approximately $75. This marks the first year AARP has released an advance COLA forecast prior to the official announcement.
By comparison, recipients received a 2.8% COLA in January 2026, which increased monthly benefits by an average of about $56. That adjustment was slightly higher than the 2.5% increase in 2025, but significantly lower than the 8.7% bump seen in 2023.
Social Security and SSI Payment Schedules
To assist beneficiaries with budgeting, the SSA provides yearly distribution schedules online. Regular retirement benefits are distributed according to the recipient’s birth date:
- Birth dates between the 1st and 10th: Wednesday, Oct. 14
- Birth dates between the 11th and 20th: Wednesday, Oct. 21
- Birth dates between the 21st and 31st: Wednesday, Oct. 28
Beneficiaries who began receiving benefits before May 1997 were paid on Friday, Oct. 2.
Meanwhile, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients received their October payments on Thursday, Oct. 1, with November payments scheduled to arrive early on Friday, Oct.
What Is Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?
