Social Security 2027 COLA Increase Overview
Beneficiaries across the United States will see a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase of 3.6 per cent in 2027, marking the largest rise in four years. Officially announced by the Social Security Administration on October 14, this adjustment aims to help millions of Americans handle shifting economic conditions.
Payments for nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will begin reflecting the new adjustments starting in January 2027.
How Much Will Monthly Checks Increase?
The impact of the 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment varies depending on the type of benefit received:
- Retired Workers: The average retired worker will see an extra $75 a month (approximately €65 and £56), totaling $900 a year (approximately €781 and £671).
- Disability and Survivor Beneficiaries: These recipients will receive an increase of $59 a month (approximately €51 and £44), totaling $708 a year (approximately €615 and £528).
Important Considerations for Retirees
While an extra $75 a month provides a welcome boost to monthly budgets, retirees should keep in mind that rising costs—such as higher Medicare expenses—could potentially eat into these gains. Beneficiaries are encouraged to review their official notices carefully to understand how these combined adjustments affect their net monthly income.
