Social Security 3.6% COLA Increase for 2027
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has officially confirmed an annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) of 3.6% for 2027. This adjustment is designed to account for changes in consumer prices as measured by the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The upcoming change will impact approximately 76 million Americans receiving payments through the agency’s programs, including retirement benefits, disability benefits, and other programs.
How Much Will Retirees Receive in 2027?
While the 3.6% figure applies across the board as an adjustment rate, it does not mean every recipient will receive the exact same dollar amount or a guaranteed flat raise. The adjustment is calculated individually based on each person’s existing benefit.
For retired workers receiving Social Security retirement benefits, the increase will amount to an average of about $75 more per month. Consequently, the average monthly retirement benefit for retired workers is projected to rise from $2,095 to approximately $2,170 starting in January 2027.
To help recipients estimate their individual adjustments, the SSA provides a simple calculation method: multiplying the current monthly benefit by 0.036. Examples of estimated increases include:
- $1,500 monthly benefit: An estimated $54 increase, bringing the total to $1,554.
- $2,000 monthly benefit: An estimated $72 increase, bringing the total to $2,072.
- $2,500 monthly benefit: An estimated $90 increase, bringing the total to $2,590.
Note that these figures represent illustrative estimates before any applicable deductions. A recipient’s actual added payment may vary depending on their current payment status and deductions.
Payment Schedule and SSI Adjustments
The 3.6% adjustment will officially take effect for Social Security benefits starting in January 2027.
The adjustment also affects individuals receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), though their payment schedule differs. Approximately 7.3 million SSI recipients will receive their increased payment earlier, arriving on December 31, 2026. Because some beneficiaries receive both Social Security and SSI, the total beneficiary count across both programs does not represent entirely separate individuals.
